mother's mother 40x30cm

This is the 3rd derivative of "Demeter - mother earth 35x35cm", although closer to "mother 35x35cm". It depicts my mother's mother Eleni Kiamili in front of her elevated house at the seafront gazing at the sky; seeking the signs that she finds that tell her what the weather is going to be like in the seasons to come... [A.R.]

mother 35x35cm

This is the 2nd derivative of "Demeter - mother earth 35x35cm", the idea is to create further derivatives until I feel satisfied that every aspect is covered. I tried this approach also with the "old lady night 30x60cm", with a series of four. Lets see how this turns out... [A.R.]

Demeter - mother earth 35x35cm

Demeter (Δήμητρα or Δημήτηρ in Greek) was in ancient Greek mythology, the goddess of cultivation i.e. agriculture, but also of the free vegetation, of the soil and of the fertility. As a consequence she was also considered the protector of marriage and of the motherhood of people. She was an Olympian (main) deity.

The name comes from the De (Δη) (Dorian version of the word Earth) and the meter (μήτηρ = mother) and means mother earth. [A.R.]

EXHIBITION empatia

EXHIBITION IN ITALY: empatia

When:  December 14th at 06:00pm until December 24th at 08:00pm

Where: Via delle Botteghelle 42, Salerno

I'm participating with the paintings "the dead village behind the wall 50x70cm", "girl with coat (2) 60x60cm".

Description:

The title of the exhibition is inspired by the concept of empathy (empatia), German Einfühlung, a term coined by the philosopher R.Vischer as the ability to get in tune with each other, as sharers of each others moods, leaving aside sympathy and antipathy, trying to relate to others with empathy. So in the arts one can speak of aesthetic sympathy, or feeling, not otherwise defined, you feel in front of a work of art. The work is perceived as beyond meaning, beyond the technical, as pure visual spontaneous participation, which creates a sense of well being and inner vision.

Free admission

Via delle Botteghelle 42, Salerno

Nord-Ostsee-Kanal view from Gut Warleberg Obstcafé (Kiel) 70x50cm

It was summertime in northern Germany (yes summertime exists there too, although not many people know that, lol) we were together with a couple of very good friends in Kiel. They took us for coffee and cake to a Obstcafé over-viewing the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (Gut Warleberg Obstcafé) not only was the range of the berry and cherry cakes divine but also there was room for the kids and the view was incredible. This view inspired this painting, which in the gloomy darkness of Hamburgs early winter I felt the urge to paint. [A.R.]

always the sea 35x35cm

See... onward she comes

Onward she nears out of the sun

See, she has no crew

She has no life, wait but here's two.

Death and she life in death,

They throw their dice for the crew

She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now.

Then... crew one by one

They drop down dead, two hundred men

She... she, life in death.

She lets him live, her chosen one. [IRON MAIDEN, The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner]

moonlit night 60x60cm

In folklore, moonlight sometimes has a harmful influence. For example, sleeping in the light of a full moon on certain nights was said to transform a person into a werewolf. The light of the moon was thought to worsen the symptoms of lunatics, and to sleep in moonlight could make one blind, or mad. Nyctalopia (night blindness caused by a lack of vitamin A), was thought to be caused by sleeping in moonlight in the tropics. silent before the storm 60x60cm

citrus from heaven 60x50cm

Citruses are low trees, whose leaves do not fall (evergreen) and thrive in tropical or sub-tropic and temperate countries (Greece). Their fruits are competing, which one reflects better the golden light, which one represents better  the sun-god, the great Apollo the god of beauty. These golden-colored fruits are the realization of light and art (beauty). Art comes into being through that light. [I.R.S.]

the yellow door 35x35cm

I think doors are strange, you never know what awaits you on the other side, if anything. I also find that doors have something in common with wild flowers, their coloring!

A bright colored door catches the eye like a bright colored flower, but is it just inviting, or is it a trap? The only way to find out is to try it out... will it be worth the risk?

A soft colored door is inconspicuous, is it trying to hide (itself and its content) or is it just humble?

Do black doors hide evil or are they just frightened of it and yearn for the cover of the night?

One could of course argue that doors are just doors, but where would be the fun in that! I prefer thinking that consciously or subconsciously, the person choosing the color did it for a reason... [I.R.S.]

Balos, Crete 90x60cm

No matter how many clothes you buy, I will always think of you naked (written on a wall in Athens) - This is the relationship between the Greek and the world, good and true is the simple and unadorned. As much as some are trying at times to dress the truth various cloaks, only the naked truth enjoys his acceptance. Political correctness was one of the things that were not discovered by the greeks. gloomy day 40x40cm

A gloomy day under a liquid sky and the path as it transforms into a hazy line that could be water. The mist gives to the scenery a shine that the approaching darkness steals away. The only fact is after all time itself. It is late, too late; the mighty night will cast all illusions into oblivion, into darkness! [I.R.S.]

The Port of Piraeus, as the largest Greek seaport, is one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean Sea basin and one of the top ten container ports in Europe. The port is also a major employer in the area, with more than 1,500 employees who provide services to more than 24,000 ships every year. white rabbit 24x30cm

The rabbit is a strange animal, varying from Bugs Bunny to the "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" [Lewis Carroll] rabbit of Alice in wonderland, yet it always comes out somehow cute. Bunnies, rabbits, although not hero material belong to the favorites of my kids... [A.R.]

gaidouraki 30x40cm

The donkey is an animal of habit, new ways, new roads, new things aren't becoming for your average donkey. When something new comes its way, it will put the feet down and nothing can move it from its place. So it is the fear of the new, the fear of the different that drives (or in this case stops) the donkey. Did you ever stop to notice how many donkeys walk among us? Many of them on two feet... Big Sur 24x18cm

After painting "on the road 24x18cm" & "on the road again 24x18cm" the time we were in Monterey (California) was all I could think of (Hey, Stephanie). While there one of our favorite pastime activities was to drive southwards the 'Highway 1' to Big Sur. Along the road walked by Jack Kerouac, and used as the title for one of his books. [A.R.]

on the road again 24x18cm

Well, I'm so tired of crying
But I'm out on the road again
I ain't got no woman
Just to call my special friend
You know the first time I traveled
Out in the rain and snow
I didn't have no payroll
Not even no place to go
And my dear mother left me
When I was quite young
She said, "Lord, have mercy
On my wicked son."
Take a hint from me, mama
Please don't you cry no more
'Cause it's soon one morning
Down the road I'm going
But I ain't going down
That long old lonesome road
All by myself
I can't carry you, baby
Gonna carry somebody else

looking out the window 70x60cm

Yeah I'm lookin' out the window, I'm lookin' at you

Well I'm dreamin' all the sweet dreams and the memories of the past

Feel so fine honey, thats why our love should last

Feel so good baby and it's all because of you

I've gotta love ya, I need to love ya, I want to love ya so nice

We're havin' all the time to ourselves

Yeah we're havin' all the fun to ourselves

Lord I'm pickin' up the pieces off the shelf

Won't take long baby 'cause there's hardly any left

Feel so good baby but it's all because of you

the armchair 30x40cm

the armchair was missing, now together with the couch, I got a set... [A.R.]

Armchair theorizingarmchair philosophizing, or armchair scholarship is an approach to providing new developments in a field that does not involve the collection of new information but, rather, a careful analysis or synthesis of existent scholarship.[1] Depending on context, the armchair approach may be considered deficient or unproductive. For example, anthropologists typically consider ethnographic fieldwork to be a necessary part of anthropological research and consider the armchair approach to be antiquated.[2] [Wikipedia]

the couch 40x30cm

although usually not comfortable, I just love the looks of these antique looking couches... [A.R.]

The term 'couch' is used in North AmericaAustraliaNew Zealand, whilst the term 'sofa' is generally used in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The word originated in Middle English from the Old French noun couche, which derived from the verb meaning 'to lie down'.[4] It originally denoted an item of furniture for lying or sleeping on, somewhat like a chaise longue, but now refers to sofas in general.
